在一个偏远的土家族县城，关雨波 （ 芦芳生 饰）与成丽雯 （ 杨采钰 饰）是高中同学。关暗恋着雯，并偷放过一封信在雯的书包里，但雯没有任何反应。1978年的高考结束，全校仅关考上省城大学，而雯却以一分之差落榜。 四年后，关大学毕业又意外地分回小城政府工作，并被下派到一个名为“公母寨”的乡镇当宣传干事，而他大学时的恋人则留在省城。颓废消极的关在孤独的小镇借酒浇愁，因买酒邂逅了在这里供销商店当营业员的雯。 原来雯的父亲被下放到该乡劳动改造，雯被招工后也要求来此以便照料父亲。重逢昔日的初恋对象，关内心激动，而雯却不卑不亢地保持着距离。因为彼此身份悬殊，雯反而显得孤傲难近。关只好每天黄昏到小店去买酒消愁并借以接近攀谈，雯指责他的酗酒颓废并暗中关照他的身体。一吵之后两人开始靠近。 在这寂寞小镇，两个唯一来自城里的青年，互相寻找着温情。但雯仅仅在生活中关心他，鼓励他重新振作，争取考研回省城以便与恋人团聚。她的内心情感却理性地封闭着，关重新发现着这个女人的一切善美，并试图闯进她的生活，却被她冷静地回避过去 。

20世纪80年代是中国当代艺术的启蒙时代，以广州与深圳为主的中国南部在实验艺术方面表现出突破性的发展，可惜在今人的研究中尚未得到足够的重视。在文革结束后，因广东与香港接壤，西方文化通过翻译的书籍文章及大众影视、流行歌曲等渠道流入广东。这股新思潮与流行文化的兴起引发了激烈的反响、争论与艺术实验。《从萨特到邓丽君：1980年代的广东当代艺术》这部纪录片包括了珍贵的电影资料片段及与十四位艺术家、评论人及策展人的访问，不单描述了80年代席卷中国的“读书热”，更凸现了在当时广东的特殊文化氛围里萌芽、并始终保持着实验精神的广东当代艺术。
